Beware That Your Beauty Products Expire!

Makeup on countertop

Like food, our makeup and skincare products have an expiration date. For the longest time I did not pay attention to this, and was not aware about the dangers of using expired skincare and makeup products. Not only will expired beauty products not perform as well, they can also have harmful side effects. Our skin is our largest organ and so we must take care of it. This includes, throwing away any expired beauty products, especially lipstick or gloss, where you can potentially ingest harmful chemicals. A study shows that only 1 in 4 women pay attention to the expiration date of their cosmetic products and continue to use them for many years, even if they smell odd or change in consistency and colour. Women are putting their health at risk by doing this, but I completely understand when you pay a lot of money for a product and love it so much that you want it to last forever. However, your products do eventually expire and you should toss them in the bin! When using expired beauty products, you put yourself at risk of infections with growing bacteria. It could cause to many skin problems, such as eye styes, breakouts, and so on. The most sensitive is the eye area, followed by the lips.

Here is a list of the maximum period of each use for the most important cosmetics:

Mascara: 3 – 6 months
Blusher: 12 – 18 months
Lipstick: 18 months
Foundation: 6 months
Eye shadow: 12 months
Liquid Eyeliner: 3 – 6 months
Shampoo: 24 months
Shower Gel: 24 months
Lip gloss: 18-24 months
Powder eyeshadow: 2 years
Cream eyeshadow: 12-18 months
Nail color: 1 year
Fragrance: 2-5 years

It is particularly important to pay attention to the expiration date of natural/organic beauty products, because they usually expire much faster than chemical infused beauty items, as they only contain a safe and small amounts of preservatives. To check the expiration date of your beauty items, simply look under the bottle and it should have the expiration date written or it should have a small jar like icon and a number with the letter “m” for months.
